Ford EcoBoost Wet Belt Replacement
The EcoBoost wet belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, and drives the oil pump. We replace it before it sheds material.
The fault
What's actually going wrong
On the EcoBoost petrol engines the timing belt is a wet belt — it sits inside the engine and runs submerged in engine oil rather than in a dry housing. Over time the belt's outer layer softens and breaks down, and the debris it sheds is carried around by the oil. That debris blocks the oil pickup and the crankcase breather, which starves the engine of oil pressure. The belt is a service item with a finite life, not a fit-and-forget part.
Left alone, a failing EcoBoost wet belt usually ends one of two ways: the oil pump stops delivering pressure and the bottom end is damaged, or the belt breaks and the valve timing is lost entirely. Both mean an engine rebuild or replacement instead of a belt job — which is exactly why we quote the belt as a planned repair.
Warning signs
Oil pressure warning light
Often the first sign that debris has restricted the pickup. Stop driving and get the car looked at rather than topping up and continuing.
Rattle or whine on cold start
A short mechanical noise from the front of the engine as the belt and tensioner take up load.
Black specks or sludge in the oil
Shredded belt material shows up on the dipstick and in the filler cap area as fine rubbery debris.
Rough running or misfire codes
A stretched or slipping belt shifts valve timing slightly, which the engine management picks up as a fault.
